Why Regular Lung Cancer Screening Is Important

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in Singapore and one of its deadliest — largely because it is typically diagnosed at a late stage when treatment options are limited. Early diagnosis increases five-year survival rates by 13 times compared to late-stage detection.

For high-risk individuals — especially smokers and ex-smokers — proactive screening is a critical tool for catching lung cancer before it becomes symptomatic. LUNGClear™ provides a non-invasive, blood-based option to assess lung cancer risk and guide follow-up investigations.

"Lung cancer kills silently. By the time symptoms appear, many patients are already at a stage where curative treatment is difficult. A blood test that can flag high-risk results early — directing those patients to timely imaging — is exactly the kind of preventive medicine that changes outcomes."

— Dr Dhivian, Angsana Medical

What Is the LUNGClear™ Test?

LUNGClear™ analyses a specific microRNA molecular signature associated with lung cancer from a blood sample. MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression and are measurably altered in lung cancer — making them reliable early biomarkers.

The test classifies each result as Low, Intermediate, or High risk. A high-risk classification directs the patient toward appropriate follow-up imaging (such as low-dose CT scanning) to confirm or rule out malignancy. It can detect lung cancer across all stages.

Accuracy at a Glance

  • 74% sensitivity (intermediate + high-risk results combined)
  • 78% specificity (intermediate + high-risk results combined)
  • 97% specificity for high-risk results alone
  • • Up to 89% specificity across all stages
  • 20% more accurate than comparable blood-based biomarker tests

This is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test

An intermediate or high-risk result indicates the need for further investigation — typically imaging. Dr Dhivian will review results with you and advise on appropriate follow-up in the context of your full clinical picture.

Who Should Take the LUNGClear™ Test?

LUNGClear™ is recommended for individuals with elevated lung cancer risk, including:

Current or former smokers
Exposure to second-hand smoke
Occupational exposure to asbestos, silica, or arsenic
Family history of lung cancer
COPD or chronic lung disease
Lung cancer survivors
Adults aged 40 and above

Frequently Asked Questions About LUNGClear™ Lung Cancer Screening in Singapore

LUNGClear™ is a blood-based lung cancer screening test that identifies a specific molecular signature (microRNA) linked to lung cancer. It classifies risk as Low, Intermediate, or High — allowing targeted follow-up for those most at risk. The test detects all stages of lung cancer.
LUNGClear™ demonstrates 74% sensitivity and 78% specificity when combining intermediate and high-risk results. For high-risk results alone, specificity rises to 97%. The test is 20% more accurate than comparable blood-based biomarker tests and demonstrates up to 89% specificity across all stages.
Current or former smokers, individuals exposed to second-hand smoke or occupational carcinogens (asbestos, silica, arsenic), those with a family history of lung cancer, COPD patients, lung cancer survivors, and adults aged 40 and above who wish to screen proactively.
Early lung cancer is often asymptomatic. Symptoms — when they do appear — may include a persistent cough, coughing up blood, breathlessness, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent chest infections. Because early-stage symptoms are easily attributed to other causes, blood-based screening is valuable for high-risk individuals.
Lung cancer is Singapore's third most common cancer. Early diagnosis increases five-year survival rates by 13 times compared to late-stage detection. The LUNGClear™ test is designed to detect lung cancer before symptoms develop — when treatment is most effective.
Low-dose CT (LDCT) scanning is another option for lung cancer screening, particularly for heavy smokers. Dr Dhivian will advise on the most appropriate screening strategy for your individual risk profile — which may include LUNGClear™ alone or in combination with imaging.
The most effective prevention strategy is not smoking, or quitting if you currently smoke. Avoiding second-hand smoke and occupational carcinogens is also important. Regular screening for high-risk individuals allows for earlier detection and intervention.
Results are typically available within 3 weeks. Dr Dhivian will review findings with you and advise on follow-up steps if an intermediate or high-risk result is returned.
