Why Regular Stomach Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Gastric cancer is among the most deadly cancers in Singapore — in part because it is often diagnosed late, when symptoms first become noticeable. When detected at Stage I, the five-year survival rate can be as high as 99%. Yet the overall five-year survival rate sits at approximately 35% because most cases are found at a later stage.

Regular stomach cancer screening has been shown to reduce the risk of dying from gastric cancer by nearly 47%. GASTROClear™ makes screening accessible and precise — no endoscopy needed, just a blood draw.

"Stomach cancer is very treatable when caught early. The challenge is that early-stage gastric cancer is usually silent — which is exactly why a reliable blood test like GASTROClear™ matters for high-risk individuals."

— Dr Dhivian, Angsana Medical

What Is the GASTROClear™ Test?

GASTROClear™ is a blood-based PCR test that analyses 12 specific microRNA biomarkers associated with gastric cancer. MicroRNAs are small molecules that regulate gene expression and are altered in cancer cells — making them reliable early indicators of tumour activity.

Unlike endoscopy, the GASTROClear™ test requires only a simple blood draw — no sedation, no hospital visit, and no fasting in most cases. It is suitable as a first-line screening tool for individuals with elevated risk, and can guide whether further investigation such as gastroscopy is warranted.

How Accurate Is GASTROClear™?

  • 87.5% sensitivity for Stage I stomach cancer
  • 89.5% sensitivity for Stage II stomach cancer
  • • Up to 89% specificity
  • 20% more accurate than comparable blood-based biomarker tests
  • • Results typically available within 3 weeks

This is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test

A positive or elevated result indicates a signal that warrants further investigation. Dr Dhivian will interpret results in the context of your full clinical picture and advise on appropriate follow-up, which may include gastroscopy.

Who Should Take the GASTROClear™ Test?

The GASTROClear™ test is recommended for adults aged 40 and above, especially those with one or more of the following risk factors:

H. pylori infection history

GASTROClear™ is a blood-based stomach cancer screening test that uses PCR technology to measure 12 microRNAs associated with gastric cancer. It is designed to detect stomach cancer at an early stage — when treatment outcomes are significantly better — with a simple blood draw.
GASTROClear™ demonstrates 87.5% sensitivity for Stage I stomach cancer and 89.5% for Stage II. It has up to 89% specificity and is 20% more accurate than other comparable blood-based biomarker tests.
Adults aged 40 and above, particularly those with H. pylori infection history, a family history of stomach cancer, CDH1 gene mutations, chronic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia, high-salt or smoked food diets, or smoking and heavy alcohol use.
Early stomach cancer is often silent. When symptoms do appear, they may include persistent indigestion, nausea, loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, and upper abdominal discomfort. Because early-stage symptoms are non-specific, screening is the most reliable way to detect gastric cancer early.
When detected early (Stage I), the five-year survival rate for stomach cancer can be as high as 99%. However, overall five-year survival is approximately 35% because most cases are diagnosed at a later stage. This underscores the importance of early screening.
